I was thirteen when I was given my first camera, an old Nikon SLR. Second hand with a small light leak. I thought it was fantastic.
From the first moment I received it that camera was glued to my hand and I enjoyed taking shots of life around me. Candid photos of people and nature.
I grew up on a farm near Scone, 2 hours north-west of Newcastle. It was a time of film and it would take up to two weeks to process one roll. The wait was worth it and my passion grew from there.
I guess it was a natural progression to do work experience at Newcastle’s Prime TV, as a camera assistant. I enjoyed the experience so much they took me on permanently at the young age of 16.
Five years later and the skills, education and experience gained from all those years saw me offered a job as a news cameraman for NBN. Seeing the world through a lens for 10 years helped develop my skills for not only film but photography too.
News is about telling a story but the images are just as important to support the narrative in the news gathering process.
An eye for detail, composition, mood and narrative are all very important for me.
I'm a big believer in continuous learning and although I don’t use film anymore, I’m always researching the latest equipment and techniques to deliver the best results. My passion still lies in capturing candid shots of people or breathtaking landscapes.
I feel I’m most at home behind a lens.
